Larkhall Academy

Positive Behaviour Policy

Effective teaching and learning and pupil attainment and achievement are directly affected by behaviour. At Larkhall Academy we wish to secure the highest possible quality of learning and teaching. We aim to deliver an educational experience that encourages all of our pupils to attain at the very highest level that they are capable of, enhances their wellbeing, promotes an understanding of the wellbeing of others, develops their personal qualities and provides them with skills for learning, life and work. The promotion of positive behaviour within the school is essential for us to achieve these aims, both in terms of the relationships and interactions that pupils have with staff and their peers.

The content of what we teach and how we teach it is a fundamental aspect of our work within Larkhall Academy. Our curriculum reflects the principles of CfE design, in that pupils will experience:

  • challenge & enjoyment
  • personalisation & choice
  • coherence & relevance
  • breadth
  • depth
  • enjoyment
  • progression

The staff at Larkhall Academy have a significant amount of experience in education and they undertake valuable professional development tasks and training on a regular basis. Our staff are committed to:

  • developing and maintaining positive relationships with all pupils
  • supporting all pupils
  • assisting all pupils fully in their learning and development
  • delivering lessons which have a high level of pupil engagement, are interesting and thought provoking
  • securing the very best outcomes for all of the pupils who attend our school

Larkhall Academy's Positive Behaviour policy creates a framework that:

  • supports a culture of praise
  • recognises and promotes exemplary pupil behaviour
  • challenges behaviour which does not meet the expected standards
  • employs appropriate sanctions and rewards in respect to the management of pupil behaviour

The expectations and responsibilities of both staff and pupils have been agreed, with both groups, following an initial consultation and subsequent review on a significant scale. Clear guidance and supporting documentation has been provided for all staff in terms of the approaches that have been set out for the work that takes place within the school.
In this policy you will find statements, practices and principles about our approach to positive behaviour, under these headings:

1. Ethos
Expectations of pupils’ behaviour
Expectations of teaching staff
Expectations of parents/carers
Expectations of the school’s Senior Management Team and Headteacher
Other methods of supporting positive behaviour within Larkhall Academy

2. Use of rewards to promote positive behaviour
Appropriate strategies which promote positive behaviour and generate a positive ethos within classrooms and across the whole school.

3. Use of sanctions in dealing with negative behaviour
Sanctions and actions that are available to the Classroom Teacher
Sanctions and actions that are available to the Principal Teacher
Sanctions and actions that are available to the Depute Head Teacher / Year Head

At Larkhall Academy pupils will be afforded opportunities to develop an understanding of their own rights and responsibilities as well as develop an awareness of the consequences of their actions. There are a wide range of strategies that the school employ for dealing with negative behaviour and these are detailed within the policy document itself. We believe it is important to address the root causes of negative behaviour and departments are also utilising reflective exercises and self-reflection forms as tools for this purpose. Copies of these are available upon request.

We value your support and recognise that you, as a parent/carer, have a pivotal role in the behaviour of your son/daughter. We would like to invite you to enter into dialogue with the school about our approaches towards behaviour and be a part of the evaluation and review process for Larkhall Academy's Positive Behaviour Policy.
