What we do

The Support for Learning department helps pupils in a variety of ways. We coordinate the support provided by the five excellent Support Assistants who offer in class support to a wide range of pupils with a wide range of needs. Our teachers also offer in class support to pupils as required. This can involve taking small groups out of class to help their performance in a specific task or project.

Support for Learning also manage the school 'Scotland Reads' programme. This offers support in reading for targeted S1 pupils in the library four days a week. We are now running literacy groups in S1, S2 and S3. These have the aim of raising reading, writing and spelling standards for targeted individuals.

Support for Learning will also conduct literacy assessments as required. We also liaise with the school's Educational Psychologist to help ensure the needs of our pupils are being met.

The Support for Learning Department also runs an Instrumental Enrichment course which aims to develop thinking skills in order to help aid problem solving.

Support for Learning also works with departments across the school to generate evidence in support of additional exam arrangements. We then ensure pupils are comfortable with the strategies put in place and provide them with practice in the build up and support on the day of their exam.

Where appropriate we will work with pupils, parents and other agencies to produce Additional Support Plans and hold regular review meetings where all have the opportunity to input.

As a department we also liaise with outreach teachers who provide additional support for pupils with hearing impairments and also pupils who might need support with their behaviour.

Support for Learning also coordinate the school's Peer Education Programme which provides both enrichment opportunities to our senior pupils and our younger pupils with further support, often on a one to one basis.

How can you help at home

Your support at home can only help your child. One of the simplest ways is to encourage your child to read for pleasure. Larkhall Academy has an excellent library which opens most days at lunchtimes and after school. Pupils can also access digital books through the RM Books option in Glow.

Your child will be following an individual reading plan supervised by the English Department and will have weekly reading targets which you can help with.

If you are at all concerned about your child's educational progress, please do not hesitate to contact the school (01698 552170) and make an appointment to see a member of staff from the Support for Learning Team.

Evaluation

The Support for Learning Department uses Survey Monkey to get feedback from pupils. The feedback is then used to help us make any necessary changes, as well as knowing what's been successful.

Below are some results from a Survey Monkey questionnaire on the S1 Literacy group:
